Ideally, our teeth would align perfectly to ensure optimal function and oral health. However, natural perfection is rare, leading to difficulties with chewing, maintaining oral hygiene, speaking clearly, and aesthetic concerns.
The most prevalent orthodontic issue is known as malocclusion, or a ‘bad bite’, which can stem from genetic factors. Additionally, habits such as childhood thumb or finger-sucking, mouth breathing, dental issues, abnormal swallowing, inadequate dental care, premature or delayed loss of baby teeth, accidents, or poor nutrition can contribute to this condition. Trauma and medical conditions like birth defects may also play a role in orthodontic problems.
While orthodontic problems can affect individuals of any age, the positive news is that most issues can be addressed regardless of age. However, early intervention is preferred to prevent further damage to the teeth or gums.
Open Bite: Occurs when certain teeth fail to make physical contact with their opposing teeth, resulting in an improper bite.
Deep Bite or Overbite: Characterized by the upper teeth overlapping the lower teeth.
Gaps Between Teeth: These can arise due to abnormal jawbone growth or missing teeth, leading to tooth shifting and the creation of spaces.
Teeth Crowding: When there's inadequate space within the jaw for all teeth to fit properly.
Underbite: Involves the lower teeth protruding past the upper front teeth.
Crossbite: When both the upper and lower jaws are misaligned.
